Noble Local – Global Walk for Water Proposal
This proposal represents a vision for bringing global education to a rural school district through authentic, place-based learning experiences that matter to students and the community they call home. Developed during my participation in the Fulbright Teachers for Global Classrooms program, it demonstrates how students can connect a global issue—access to clean water—to meaningful local action through service learning, community partnerships, and student leadership.
Although created for Noble Local Schools, this proposal reflects my broader belief that global competence begins within our own communities. When students understand where they come from, value the strengths of their community, and recognize local challenges, they are better prepared to understand and positively impact the world around them.
I want students to know that they do not have to leave their community to make a difference. Even from a small district in Ohio, students can think globally, act locally, and become compassionate leaders who understand that their voices, ideas, and actions have the power to create meaningful change.
Becoming Global Citizens: Learning Beyond Our Border
This lesson demonstrates how global education can be integrated into the English Language Arts classroom through inquiry, cultural exploration, and authentic learning. Students research a country, examine a significant global issue affecting its people, and connect their learning to their own lives through reflection and a culminating “Taste the World” event. By exploring both the strengths and challenges of another culture, students develop empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a globally competent citizen. This artifact reflects my belief that meaningful global learning extends beyond cultural celebrations by encouraging students to consider multiple perspectives and recognize their role in an interconnected world.
Parent Communication – Global Learning Unit
This parent communication letter highlights my commitment to building meaningful school-home partnerships while integrating global education into everyday classroom learning. Shared at the beginning of our Chocolate Collection unit, the letter provides families with an overview of the learning goals, essential questions, classroom activities, and opportunities for community involvement.
By intentionally communicating the purpose behind our learning, I invite families to become partners in helping students make connections between their local community and the wider world. The letter demonstrates how even a familiar topic, such as chocolate, can open discussions about culture, ethics, sustainability, and global interdependence.
This artifact also illustrates the importance of proactive and accessible communication. Simple tools such as newsletters, emails, or classroom updates can make learning visible, encourage meaningful conversations at home, and strengthen connections between schools, families, and communities. Additionally, this communication serves as a model for other educators by demonstrating how intentional parent engagement can support authentic, globally focused learning experiences and help students develop empathy, perspective-taking, and an understanding of their role as informed global citizens.
Advocacy for Place-Based Learning
This letter highlights my efforts to advocate for place-based global education beyond my own classroom by initiating collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. In the letter, I describe how I integrated Ohio-approved curriculum with global competence through authentic, local-to-global learning experiences and explored opportunities to share these practices with educators across the state.
This artifact reflects my growth as an educator and my commitment to educational leadership, collaboration, and continuous learning. It demonstrates my belief that global education does not require entirely new curriculum, but rather a different lens, one that helps students recognize the connections between their local community and the wider world.
By building partnerships and sharing classroom examples, I hope to support other educators in creating meaningful learning experiences that develop curiosity, empathy, and global awareness for all students.
